I asked Jason about creating a drum that matched the look of my kit, and provides a deep, resonant boom that could approximate an Odaiko/Taiko drum sound in my acoustic kit, without the weight, space and expense of the real thing. We discussed shell diameter, thickness and depth, kit placement, and heads selection to arrive at the design that made most sense.
The result is beautiful, fits perfectly in the kit, and sounds SO DARNED GOOD! In my big acoustic kit (22 pieces), all made by TreeHouse, this beast of a drum is my current favorite. It allows me to add a massive bottom end to some arrangements, add taiko-like elements to others, or just create a brooding tonal atmosphere. So much fun!!!! Here’s a little skinnier (12” deep) and a little thinner (6-ply maple) TreeHouse Tupan that will save your back while producing BIG sounds. BOOM TEK!
Dial in a little skinnier drum at only 12" deep + a thinner maple shell of 6 plies instead of the typical 8 plies and you get a big boom that won't wear you out the third mile of the parade. 12x24; plied maple; satin wax.
Independent Tuning is the focus of what's going on here -- loosen one side and the other stays put. That means you can scream your "Teks" on the treble while still rearranging bowels with the bass side. This one features a built-in mic and all black ropes on natural oil/wax finish. 16x22; plied maple; satin wax.
'Cause sometimes your Alpine band needs its logo custom-painted on the front of your leader's Tupan shell! This Tupan features a wooden hoop for the bass side with a metal ring on the treble side. "Framed" around the painted band logo is an organic-shaped burned trough so that the dye of the shell color stays away from the paint. Can't wait to see these guys on stage! 14x18; plied maple; satin wax.
Here's a view of a Tupan with another version of our snazzy new-ish Independent Tuning. This time, the "belts" down the center are of the same rope as the rest of the tuning ropes. Boom! 15x20; plied maple; satin wax.
